Tribal Nations Attorney

Drummond Woodsum is seeking an associate to join its nationally-ranked Tribal Nations Services Group. The associate selected for this position will work from either our firm’s home office in Portland, Maine, or our satellite office in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Drummond Woodsum’s Tribal Nations Services Group provides high-level, quality services to Tribal nations, Tribal enterprises, and companies that do business with Tribal nations or in Indian Country. Our practice, with Tribal government clients and Tribal businesses, advocate for Nation building actions through the creation and maintenance of strong, resilient governmental structures and economies. We serve as outside general counsel to many of our clients, guiding our clients through complex, sophisticated Indian Country projects and facilitating nationwide business and financial transactions. We represent our Tribal clients in litigation and other adversarial proceedings, advocacy settings before federal, state, and tribal forums, as well as in various negotiations with States and other non-tribal governments. Because Drummond Woodsum is a full-service law firm, our attorneys share their deep knowledge of their respective areas of law, enabling us to meet and satisfy our clients’ needs efficiently and effectively.
Qualifying candidates include mid-level associates with three to six years of experience. Required skills include top academic credentials, strong analytical capacity, excellent communication skills (particularly legal writing skills), and an athletic spirit with the ability to work well on a team. A judicial clerkship is not required but is preferred. Membership in a Tribal Bar is also strongly preferred. Knowledge of and experience working in indigenous communities is strongly preferred, as members of the firm’s Tribal Nations Services Group are expected to be dedicated to advocacy on behalf of indigenous peoples.

Drummond Woodsum seeks an attorney to join its longstanding municipal practice at its Portland, Maine office. Our municipal practice group uses a team-based approach to advise towns and cities on land use, zoning, environmental, subdivision, and land use permitting matters, as well as matters involving Maine’s right-to-know law, elections, real estate, property taxation, municipal finance, labor and employment, and litigation. Our attorneys frequently interact with and appear before public officials, both elected and appointed, as well as public boards and councils.
Candidates must have outstanding academic credentials, excellent research and writing skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to manage and work well on a team. Legal Assistant
Legal Assistant

Drummond Woodsum is seeking a full-time legal assistant for our School Law and Municipal Law Groups in our Portland, Maine office. These two practice groups support the public and private schools and municipalities throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Legal assistants working in these practice groups help provide administrative services, draft various documents for attorney review, and generally provide support to enhance attorney/timekeeper effectiveness.
Responsibilities include:
- Complete administrative duties, such as making copies, answering and directing phone calls, and greeting clients
- Prepare documents and forms by completing initial drafts, processing edits and red-lining in Word, and conversions and manipulations in PDF
- Handle incoming and outgoing mail
- Communicate with clients
- Keep files and corresponding deadlines organized and identified
- Provide exceptional service to all clients
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Be accurate, detail-oriented, and have strong attention to detail
- Take initiative and be proactive; anticipate needs; reach out to become more involved
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills; excellent spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills
- System proficiency: general knowledge and experience with common software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite and PDF processing; strong Excel and MS Word skills in particular
- Motivated to learn and provide work of the highest quality
