Real Estate Paralegal

Real Estate Paralegal
Portland, Maine

Drummond Woodsum is seeking a full-time Real Estate Paralegal to join our firm’s Real Estate Department in our Portland office.  The ideal candidate will be familiar with real estate transactions generally and experienced in performing title examinations; preparation of title insurance commitments and policies; drafting deeds, easements, and other real estate transaction-related documents; familiar with title insurance endorsements and closings of real estate transactions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Title examination and research, including reviewing the status of taxes, liens, and encumbrances and comparing legal descriptions in instruments of record with surveys and other information to determine the impact on the title to real estate;
  • Preparing reports summarizing title research;
  • Issuing title insurance commitments and policies, including facility with title insurance endorsements;
  • Communicating with title insurance companies, including negotiating rates, endorsements, and affirmative coverage;
  • Evaluating and analyzing title issues and working with attorneys on potential solutions;
  • Recording of documents and filing of transfer tax declarations, including electronically; and
  • Assisting attorneys with the closing of real estate transactions.

Skill requirements for this position include:

  • Working knowledge of real estate transactions and closings;
  • Effective analytical and communication skills;
  • Title examination, analysis and underwriting experience;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; and
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects at once.

Labor and Employment Attorney

Drummond Woodsum’s Manchester, NH office is seeking an attorney to join our labor and employment law practice group. We are a tight-knit team that provides counsel to public and private sector employers, as well as tribal nations. Our team provides labor and employment counseling on all aspects of the employer/employee relationship, including collective bargaining, grievance administration, workplace discrimination, ADA compliance, state and federal wage and hour laws, and workplace misconduct.  We also represent clients in state and federal courts, before federal and state agencies, and in labor arbitration.  Our team is frequently called upon to provide clients with workplace training.

This position is open to qualified applicants who have excellent academic credentials, research, writing, and analytical skills, and who are highly motivated to learn. We are seeking a candidate who has strong interpersonal skills, and who is able to balance client advocacy with compassion and understanding. Applicants with 1-3 years of prior litigation or employment/labor law experience are preferred, but applicants without prior experience are encouraged to apply, including recent law school graduates. Student Rights Attorney

Drummond Woodsum’s Portland, ME office are looking for an experienced attorney to join our school law practice representing public school districts with a focus on special education. Our special education practice serves schools throughout the State of Maine. Our practice includes advising school clients on their special education duties and other student rights issues, as well as conflict resolution and litigation of special education disputes. Our school law team also regularly conducts lively presentations and trainings for our clients and school officials, both in person and via online platforms.

The ideal candidate for this position is an attorney with at least 3-5 years of legal experience and a desire to practice law using a team based approach. While experience in the world of special education is desirable, it is more important that the right candidate have excellent academic credentials, research, writing, and analytical skills, and be highly motivated to learn.

The successful candidate will be based out of the firm’s Portland, Maine office. The group’s practice involves affordable housing and other community development transactions, including representation of developers and funders in significant low-income housing tax credit and HUD transactions, historic tax credit transactions, new market tax credit transactions, and other public-private partnership transactions primarily in Maine and New Hampshire. Candidates with experience in these areas are encouraged to apply. Legal Assistant

Legal Assistant

Drummond Woodsum welcomes applications for Legal Assistants, either with prior experience or from a position with transferrable skills, on a rolling basis for our Portland, ME office.

Our legal assistants support a variety of timekeepers (usually three to five attorneys/consultants) and are assigned to one of three groups:

  • Business services (including real estate, tax, and trust & estates)
  • Litigation
  • Public sector (including school law, labor & employment, and municipal & land use)

Day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Sorting/scanning/distributing mail
  • Complete credit card and travel reimbursements
  • Set-up conference rooms for on-site client and internal meetings, including ordering and setting up food orders
  • Prepare cover letters and process edited legal documents, by either red-lined changes, dictation, or handwritten edits
  • Additional administrative tasks as assigned

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of office equipment, like copiers and fax machines
  • General computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to recognize priority assignments
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task
