Drummond Woodsum Strategic Consulting Celebrates 10th Anniversary

This week, Drummond Woodsum proudly celebrates the 10th anniversary of Drummond Woodsum Strategic Consulting (DWSC), marking a decade of helping organizations navigate government, build coalitions, and drive meaningful change throughout Maine and New England.

When longtime campaign expert and political strategist Toby McGrath launched DWSC a decade ago, the group was unlike anything else in Maine. Bringing together campaign strategy, government relations, public affairs, and communications under the umbrella of a law firm was an innovative approach that has since become one of the practice’s defining strengths. With the support of firm leadership, the experienced consultants who make up the DWSC team have helped to fulfill McGrath’s vision of helping clients achieve meaningful policy victories and advance initiatives that have shaped communities across Maine and New Hampshire.

Looking back, McGrath recalls just how unconventional the idea seemed at the time.”People thought I was crazy,” he said. “It was the flexibility, the innovation, and the trust that Drummond Woodsum provided that allowed us to start this endeavor.”

For the past 10 years, the team’s work has centered on a simple mission: educate policymakers, build coalitions, and drive change on behalf of the organizations and communities they serve.

That commitment has shaped every aspect of DWSC’s work. The team has led successful political campaigns, advised public and private organizations, and advocated for legislation that has improved the lives of people throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Among the many initiatives that reflect the firm’s collaborative, relationship-driven approach is its longstanding work with the Wabanaki Nations. From helping to organize and build support for the Wabanaki Alliance, to advocating for sports betting and internet gaming legislation, to creating gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidate forums focused on Tribal issues, DWSC has partnered with Tribal leaders to advance priorities that strengthen Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

While the tools and tactics of advocacy have evolved dramatically over the past decade—with digital communications, social media, and an increasingly rapid news cycle changing the way information and misinformation—spreads, the team’s core approach has remained constant. Success has never been about chasing headlines or promising quick wins. Instead, DWSC has built its reputation by earning trust, communicating candidly, and helping clients build lasting support for their goals.

“We don’t promise the world,” McGrath said. “We promise results.”

Today, the team is recognized as one of Northern New England’s leading government relations and public affairs consulting practices. As Drummond Woodsum Strategic Consulting begins its second decade, the team remains focused on helping clients navigate complex public policy challenges, build strategic partnerships, and create lasting, positive change throughout the region.
