Litigation Attorney

Portland, Maine

We seek an attorney to join the Trial Services Group in our Portland, Maine office. If you’re someone who’s gained litigation experience in a law firm, government practice, or through clerking, we want to hear from you!

This is a general litigation role where you will work closely with other skilled litigators and subject matter experts across practice groups, collaborating on the complex legal issues that arise in these cases from the start of a dispute, to trial, and on appeal. You will have the opportunity to showcase your expertise with clients, other practitioners, and in the courtroom.

If you have top-notch research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, a passion for the law, a strong work ethic, a desire to work closely with others, exceptional client relation skills, and impressive academic credentials, we encourage you to apply. Legal Assistant

Manchester, NH

Drummond Woodsum is seeking a full-time legal assistant for our School Law and Litigation Groups in our Manchester, New Hampshire office. As a legal assistant, in this role you’ll support various attorneys by providing administrative services, drafting various documents for attorney review, and generally provide support to enhance attorney/timekeeper effectiveness. While a background in litigation isn’t required, it would be beneficial for this position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Complete administrative duties, such as making copies, answering and directing phone calls, and greeting clients
  • Prepare documents and forms by completing initial drafts, processing edits and red-lining in Word, and conversions and manipulations in PDF
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail
  • Communicate with clients
  • Keep files and corresponding deadlines organized and identified
  • Provide exceptional service to all clients
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Be accurate, detail-oriented, and have strong attention to detail
  • Take initiative and be proactive; anticipate needs; reach out to become more involved
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills; excellent spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills
  • System proficiency: general knowledge and experience with common software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite and PDF processing; strong Excel and MS Word skills in particular
  • Motivated to learn and provide work of the highest quality

Legal Assistant/Paralegal Hybrid

Portland, Maine

Drummond Woodsum is seeking a full-time hybrid Legal Assistant/Paralegal for our Municipal Law Group in our Portland, Maine office. This practice group supports municipalities throughout Maine and New Hampshire by providing a broad range of legal services. Legal Assistants/Paralegals in this group play a crucial role by assisting attorneys with detailed administrative and research support, including drafting and reviewing legal documents, conducting in-depth legal research on municipal issues, managing complex data input, and overseeing comprehensive case management to ensure smooth and efficient operations. This position requires a high level of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic legal environment. While prior experience in litigation is not required, it would be beneficial for this position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with attorneys, clients, and other professionals to discuss assigned cases and projects
  • Maintain and organize legal files, records, and documents, including complex data manipulation in Excel spreadsheets
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on municipal law, zoning, land use, public records, and other relevant legal issues
  • Draft correspondence, memoranda, and other communications on behalf of attorneys
  • Respond to public records requests, including FOAA (Freedom of Access Act) and FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) inquiries
  • Provide litigation support, including preparation of pleading materials and case management
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of litigation proceedings, municipal law, and local government operations is preferred
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills; excellent spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills
  • System proficiency: general knowledge and experience with common software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite and PDF processing; strong Excel and MS Word skills in particular

Real Estate Paralegal

Portland, Maine

Drummond Woodsum is seeking a full-time Real Estate Paralegal to join our firm’s Real Estate Department in our Portland office.  The ideal candidate will be familiar with real estate transactions generally and experienced in performing title examinations; preparation of title insurance commitments and policies; drafting deeds, easements, and other real estate transaction-related documents; familiar with title insurance endorsements and closings of real estate transactions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Title examination and research, including reviewing status of taxes, liens and encumbrances and comparing legal descriptions in instruments of record with surveys and other information to determine impact on title to real estate
  • Preparing reports summarizing title research
  • Issuing title insurance commitments and policies, including facility with title insurance endorsements
  • Communicating with title insurance companies, including negotiating rates, endorsements, and affirmative coverage
  • Evaluating and analyzing title issues and working with attorneys on potential solutions
  • Recording of documents and filing of transfer tax declarations, including electronically
  • Assisting attorneys with closing of real estate transactions

Skill Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of real estate transactions and closings
  • Effective analytical and communication skills
  • Title examination, analysis and underwriting experience
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects at once
